OSSD Pathway

The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is Ontario’s official high school qualification, issued under the requirements of the province’s Ministry of Education. In simple terms, it is the certificate students earn after completing Ontario’s secondary school programme.

To graduate, students complete 30 course credits. Depending on when they begin the programme, 17 or 18 are required subjects and the remaining credits are chosen from available options. Students must also complete 40 hours of community involvement and meet the provincial literacy requirement, either by passing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) or completing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC).

Because the OSSD is a Canadian high school qualification, Canadian universities and colleges understand it directly. For eligible students, this can make academic assessment and admission planning more straightforward than pathways that require institutions to interpret a different school system. Entry requirements still vary by institution and programme, so careful subject selection and planning remain important.

What if I already have some secondary school credits?

Previous studies may be reviewed to see whether eligible learning can count towards OSSD requirements. The outcome depends on the student’s records, subjects and the assessment made by an authorised Ontario school.
